Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 3, 2026
Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how laugh.town (“the Service,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses, and shares personal data, and the choices available to you. The Service is operated by Tyler (the “Operator”), who acts as the data controller.
laugh.town is a comedy database built on the AT Protocol, a decentralized social networking protocol where most user activity is public by design. Please exercise care when deciding what to share through the Service. The Service is operated from the United States, and personal data is processed there.
Information We Collect
Account information. Authentication uses AT Protocol OAuth. For accounts hosted on our personal data server (bag.laugh.town), that server stores your handle, email address, and a cryptographic hash of your password. Our application database stores your DID (decentralized identifier), handle, email address, and account preferences.
Applications and page claims. If you apply to join the Service or request to claim a comedian or venue page, we collect the information you submit (name, email address, links, and contact information). It is visible to moderators solely for verification and is not published.
Content you publish. Favorites, RSVPs, events you post, and edit suggestions are written as records to your AT Protocol repository. These records are public, attributed to your handle, and federate across the AT Protocol network, where they may be read and copied by third parties outside our control. The Service has no private mode. Uploaded images are dedicated to the public domain (CC0) under the Terms of Service and are stored as uploaded, including any embedded file metadata.
Usage information. We collect usage analytics (page views, interactions, errors, and performance), processed by a third-party analytics provider. Until you grant consent, analytics stores no identifier on your device and each visit is treated as new; if you grant consent, a persistent identifier is stored and, for signed-in users, activity is associated with your account. Clicks on outbound ticket and website links are logged server-side (destination, associated event, IP address, browser, and referring page). Our infrastructure also generates short-lived server logs (IP address, user agent) used for security and debugging, and counts poster images served to other applications in aggregate, without IP addresses or per-user identifiers.
Cookies
We use cookies to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences, including your home scene, timezone, and consent choice. Analytics cookies and identifiers are set only after you grant consent. Browser local storage holds data that is not transmitted to us, such as theme preference, unsaved drafts, and, for signed-in users, OAuth session tokens.
Consent Records
When you make or change a privacy choice, we record it: a randomly generated receipt identifier, the choice made, the time it was made, and the version of this policy then in effect. IP addresses are deliberately not recorded with consent records. Withdrawals are recorded as new entries, and the history is retained as evidence of consent.
How We Use and Share Information
We use personal data to operate the Service, authenticate users, moderate content and verify claims, measure and improve the Service subject to the consent framework above, prevent abuse, and comply with legal obligations.
We share personal data with service providers that assist in operating the Service, such as hosting, database, analytics, and backup providers, who may use it only on our behalf. We may disclose personal data where we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect the rights or safety of the Service, its users, or others. Content you publish is shared with the AT Protocol network by design.
We do not sell personal data, do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and do not serve advertising. We do not send marketing communications.
Your Rights and Choices
- Analytics consent. Grant or decline consent via the notice shown on your first visit. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser is honored automatically and treated as declined consent. You may withdraw consent at any time by clearing this site’s cookies, after which you will be asked again, or by contacting us.
- Export. Download a complete copy of your repository at any time from Settings.
- Access, correction, and deletion. Request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting us. Account deletion is currently processed manually.
- Non-users. Comedian and venue pages are compiled from public sources; if a page concerns you, you may request correction or removal by contacting us.
Residents of US states with comprehensive privacy laws additionally have the right to know, access, correct, delete, and port their personal data, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. Because we do not sell personal data, share it for advertising, or engage in targeted advertising or significant profiling, there is nothing to opt out of. To exercise any right, contact us; we verify requests against your account or the email on file and respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
Retention
We retain personal data for as long as you use the Service or as needed for the purposes above. Sign-in sessions expire after 30 days, server logs are short-lived, and backups age out on a rolling schedule. Published records remain in your repository until you delete them; deletions propagate to the network, but copies already made by third parties are outside our control.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards designed to protect personal data, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13, we do not knowingly collect personal data from them, and they may not create accounts.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top reflects the latest revision; material changes will be announced on the Service.
