Comedy Heights had another strong Friday and Saturday night at Lestat’s on Adams Ave, and this weekend belonged to Justin Foster. Justin has the kind of stage presence that sneaks up on an audience. He does not come out forcing the room to laugh. He pulls people in, lets the stories get strange, then finds the punchline in places you do not see coming. His comedy felt loose, confident, personal, and wonderfully off-center — the kind of headlining set that reminds you how much fun live stand-up can be when the comic is fully in control but still willing to play. The weekend also had a terrific mix of voices, with Raul Zambrano, Nic Flair, Anika Breza, and Al Gavi helping shape both shows into fast-moving nights of comedy. Each comic brought a different flavor, keeping the energy fresh and giving the audiences plenty to respond to from start to finish. Lestat’s continues to be one of the best rooms in San Diego for this kind of comedy: close, intimate, and honest. You can feel the crowd, the comics can feel the crowd, and when everything clicks, the whole room becomes part of the show. That was the case this past weekend.
